Vietnam market volatility, foreign inflows, and resistance
Overview
Following a strong August, the Vietnamese equity market entered September facing resistance near the 1,850 to 1,900 point range. On September 3, the VN-Index closed slightly lower at 1,827.72, reflecting divergent trends: Vingroup (VIC) reached a record market capitalization of 1.9 quadrillion VND, while major banking stocks like VCB, TCB, and VPB faced pressure. During this period, foreign investors recorded a net sell-off exceeding 1,562 billion VND across three exchanges.
Market volatility persisted into early September. On September 7, the VN-Index initially surged by 17 points toward the 1,850 mark, but intense selling pressure caused a reversal. The index ultimately fell by 3.32 points, or 0.18%, to close at 1,827 points. By September 9, the VN-Index closed at 1,827.12 points. Analysts from HSC and TPS noted that liquidity had not improved significantly, suggesting the recovery lacked a sufficient basis to confirm a new long-term upward trend.
By mid-September, the market entered a period of significant downward adjustment. After three weeks of recovery, the VN-Index fell approximately 3.12% last week, dropping below the psychological 1,800-point threshold to settle around 1,795 points. This decline was driven by widespread selling pressure across finance, real estate, and technology sectors, alongside increased liquidity and continued net selling by foreign investors. Analysts suggest the index may continue to fluctuate or test support levels between 1,765 and 1,810 points. Uncertainty is being driven by rising US Treasury yields, the upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting, and the anticipated FTSE Russell market upgrade effective September 21.
