VNG relies on Algerian gas to diversify German energy supplies

German gas group VNG is utilizing Algerian natural gas to diversify its supply chain and enhance energy resilience. This strategic shift comes as Germany faces historically low gas storage levels, with capacities reported at only 57% for September.

VNG CEO Ulf Heitmüller stated that the company's import portfolio is now better equipped to handle market disruptions through diversified contracts with Algeria, Azerbaijan, and pipeline deliveries from Norway. VNG became the first German company to purchase Algerian gas via pipeline in January 2024.

A new agreement signed with Sonatrach in July 2026 aims to increase natural gas volumes for the German market starting in January 2027, establishing a long-term partnership intended to secure European energy in the post-Russian gas era.
