VNG energy supply diversification efforts

Overview

German gas group VNG is pursuing a strategy of supply chain diversification to enhance energy resilience and secure European energy in the post-Russian gas era.

In late September 2026, it was reported that VNG is utilizing Algerian natural gas to mitigate risks associated with low gas storage levels in Germany. Following an agreement with Sonatrach in July 2026, the company expects to increase natural gas volumes from Algeria starting in January 2027.

By early October 2026, VNG expanded its focus toward Azerbaijan, expressing interest in increasing imports from the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). While current contracts are short-term, the company is prepared to enter agreements spanning 15 to 20 years. This proposed partnership aims to extend beyond natural gas into energy transition sectors, including hydrogen, biomethane, and renewable energy, while ensuring compliance with European Union methane emission standards.
