Voepass safety lapses exposed after fatal Brazil crash
On 9 August 2024 a Voepass ATR‑72 operating flight 2283 crashed in Vinhedo, São Paulo, killing 62 passengers and crew. The final report of Brazil’s aviation safety board Cenipa found that Voepass routinely falsified maintenance records, logging repairs that were never carried out and repeatedly restarting the deadlines set by the Lista de Equipamentos Mínimos (MEL). The airline also substituted defective parts with other faulty components, allowing the aircraft to remain in service despite known technical problems.
Cenipa determined that the aircraft left the runway with an inoperative wing‑de‑icing system and a right‑hand windshield defect that should have barred take‑off under the forecasted icing conditions. The report noted that the agency Anac received false information from Voepass and that Anac’s own oversight, despite several notifications between 2022 and 2024, failed to prevent the flight. Anac president Álvaro Faierstein publicly acknowledged the deception. Cenipa identified 19 contributing factors, 15 of which directly caused the crash, and issued recommendations that Anac will review within four months.
