Voepass Flight 2283 De‑icing Failure Confirmed by Cockpit Voice Recorder

On 9 August 2024, a Voepass Embraer 170 crashed while approaching Vinhedo, São Paulo, killing 62 people. The Federal Police released the cockpit‑voice‑recorder transcript, showing the captain comparing the aircraft to a “Fusquinha” (the Herbie car from the classic film) and stating that the de‑icing system was not functioning.

The recording also reveals a series of ice‑formation alerts, the crew’s discussion of altitude changes to avoid further icing, and a failure to execute the manufacturer’s required procedure to leave the icy area. The investigation, conducted by Brazil’s Federal Police and the Aviation Accident Investigation Center (CENIPA), notes that similar de‑icing faults had been reported on previous flights by the same crew. Families of victims, including the mother of Dr Arianne Risso, have reviewed the transcript, which confirms the system fault and pilot‑in‑flight comments.
