Mount Anak Krakatau eruption triggers weather modification and relief efforts
Following the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, the Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is preparing weather modification operations to reduce the density of volcanic ash in the atmosphere. The agency plans to use cloud seeding to induce rain or water misting to bind dust, depending on cloud presence. These operations are expected to target a reduction in ash density within one to two days, provided weather and flight safety conditions allow.
The volcanic ash has caused disruptions to airport operations and impacted air quality across Banten, Lampung, and parts of Greater Jakarta. In response, local governments and organizations have initiated various mitigation efforts. The Serang City Government has implemented distance learning for schools to minimize health risks, while the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) in Tangsel has distributed 14,000 masks to residents.
Additionally, emergency water distribution is underway in several regions. In Makassar, Perumda Air Minum is using pickup trucks to reach residential areas with narrow access. In Gunungkidul, the regional police (Polda DIY) are operating water treatment facilities to combat drought and ash-related water issues. BNPB has also dispatched teams to monitor logistics and food supplies in affected provinces.
