Anak Krakatau volcanic activity and ash impact
Overview
Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait experienced a period of intense volcanic activity in late August 2026. During this time, the volcano produced frequent eruptions, including a series of events on August 24 and 25 that sent ash columns hundreds of meters above the peak. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) prohibited all activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the active crater. By early September, volcanic ash began impacting the Jakarta metropolitan area. To mitigate air quality issues, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and Brimob Polda Metro Jaya deployed water mist fleets, street sweepers, and armored water cannons across Jakarta, South Tangerang, and Bekasi. Mitigation efforts also included the early conclusion of the Car Free Day event in the Sudirman-Thamrin area. The ash has caused economic disruptions regarding respiratory protection, with reports of significant price surges for masks on e-commerce platforms. As of September 7, 2026, continuous eruptions have been reported since September 4, and the volcano remains at Level III (Alert) status. The ash continues to spread across Banten, Jakarta, Lampung, and West Java, impacting air travel and public health. In response to the health risks, the Indonesian Ministry of Home Affairs has authorized local governments to implement flexible working arrangements for Civil Servants (ASN). Minister Tito Karnavian stated that regional governments may allow employees to work from home (WFH) if volcanic ash poses risks to health or safety. The Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN-RB) clarified that the decision rests with respective agency heads, with the policy potentially covering up to 80 percent of the workforce in affected areas. To address rising ash density, the Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is preparing weather modification operations, such as cloud seeding or water misting, to bind dust.
