Volkswagen adds smartphone car‑key support as comfort‑opening features gain attention

Volkswagen has updated its iOS app to support the Apple Car Key, allowing compatible smartphones to replace the traditional key fob for selected ID‑series models. The digital key is stored in Apple Wallet (and later Google Wallet) and can be shared with family members, but it requires a recent vehicle software version, an active VW‑Connect contract, identity verification and a compatible phone.

Modern car keys also often include a hidden “comfort‑opening” function. By holding the unlock button, drivers can remotely lower windows, open a panoramic sunroof and activate seat ventilation, helping to cool a vehicle that has been heated in the sun. The exact capabilities depend on the car make and model.
