Volkswagen and Audi recall millions of vehicles over steering defect
Volkswagen and Audi have initiated a massive global vehicle recall affecting millions of cars and vans. The recall is caused by a defective 7 cm fastening screw in the steering box, which may be susceptible to moisture and corrosion over time. If the screw breaks due to oxidation, it could damage the steering box and lead to a loss of vehicle control, particularly during low-speed maneuvers such as parking.
Reports indicate that between 2.8 million and 4.3 million vehicles across various brands—including Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, and Seat—are affected. The defect primarily concerns models manufactured between 2013 and 2014. While Volkswagen states there is no immediate risk and no accidents or injuries have been reported to date, the company estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled fleet could be significantly impacted by the defect.
Adding to the logistical challenge, reports suggest that Volkswagen may face delays in addressing the issue due to insufficient stocks of replacement parts, potentially stretching the replacement process over several months. This technical crisis arrives as the manufacturer also faces labor tensions and negotiations with the IG Metall union.
