Volkswagen Group recalls steering and battery components
Overview
Volkswagen Group is managing two major vehicle recall campaigns. The first involves millions of vehicles across the Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, and Škoda brands due to a steering issue. A faulty fastening component—specifically a 7 cm screw or hexagonal bolt securing the steering box to the front axle subframe—may corrode and break when exposed to moisture or road salt. This failure could lead to a sudden loss of steering control or vehicle instability.
Recent data expands the scope of this steering recall: Volkswagen is recalling approximately 2.16 million vehicles, including Golf, Tiguan, Touran, and Caddy models produced between September 2013 and July 2024. Audi is recalling roughly 696,500 Q3 models manufactured between October 2017 and May 2024, while Škoda is recalling over 1.7 million vehicles, including the Octavia, Superb, Karoq, and Kodiaq. The Škoda recall specifically covers models produced between November 2015 and August 2026. While the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) reports no injuries or accidents related to this defect, the recalls are being treated as a critical preventive measure.
Simultaneously, the company is addressing a second recall targeting electric vehicles, specifically the ID. family (including ID. 3, ID. 4, ID. 7, and ID. Buzz) and the Cupra Born. Internal quality checks identified faulty high-voltage battery cells resulting from supplier production errors, which can cause increased thermal stress and pose a fire risk. More than 72,000 vehicles are affected globally. To mitigate this risk, Volkswagen is limiting the maximum battery charge to 80 percent and advising owners to charge affected vehicles only outdoors. In the United States, a specific recall involves approximately 22,524 ID.4 models from model years 2023 through 2026. While no personal injuries have been reported, Volkswagen has confirmed that some property damage has occurred in connection with these battery issues.

Claims
What the coverage asserts, and how many sources carry each claim.
Coverage disagrees
Sources make claims that cannot both be true. CLSTR reports the disagreement; it does not decide who is right.
-
"Volkswagen is recalling several thousand electric vehicles due to defective high-voltage battery cells."
vs
"The Volkswagen Group is recalling 4.6 million vehicles worldwide due to a steering issue."
The claims specify different causes (battery cells vs. steering issue) and vastly different scales (several thousand vs. 4.6 million vehicles) for the recall.
-
"Volkswagen and Cupra are recalling more than 70,000 electric vehicles worldwide." www.halternerzeitung.de · www.waltroper-zeitung.de · www.muensterlandzeitung.de · www.ruhrnachrichten.de
vs
"Volkswagen is recalling several thousand electric vehicles due to defective high-voltage battery cells."
The claims provide conflicting numbers for the total number of electric vehicles being recalled (several thousand vs. more than 70,000).
