Volkswagen recalls over 72,000 electric vehicles globally

Volkswagen Group has initiated a global recall of approximately 72,700 electric vehicles due to defects in high-voltage battery cells. The issue, identified through internal quality checks, involves production errors from suppliers that could cause cells to overheat, potentially leading to fires in extreme cases.

The recall affects several popular models produced between 2022 and 2025, including the VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID.Buzz, as well as the Cupra Born. While no injuries or property damage have been reported, the company has issued immediate safety precautions.

Affected owners are advised to charge their vehicles outdoors and limit the charge to a maximum of 80 percent until inspections are completed. Depending on the specific case, the issue may be resolved through a software update or by replacing battery modules. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has officially registered the recall.
