Volkswagen and SITIAVW extend labor negotiations in Puebla
Volkswagen de México and the Independent Union of Automotive Industry Workers of Volkswagen de México (SITIAVW) have agreed to a three-day extension to continue negotiations regarding the 2026 collective bargaining agreement. The new deadline to reach a consensus and avoid a strike is set for Wednesday, August 26, at 11:00 AM.
A primary point of contention remains the salary increase. While SITIAVW initially requested a 17% increase, it has since adjusted its demand to 10% for wages and benefits. Volkswagen has countered with a 6% proposal, leaving a four-percentage-point gap between the two parties. The negotiations are being mediated by the Mexican Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS).
In response to rumors of mass layoffs and production shift cancellations, SITIAVW issued a statement rejecting these claims, characterizing them as attempts at intimidation during the negotiation process.
The labor dispute has drawn international attention, with the United Auto Workers (UAW) in the United States issuing a declaration of solidarity with the workers in Puebla. Other regional unions, including SITAUDI and SINTTIA, have also expressed support or called for the protection of labor rights within the industry.
