Labor negotiations between Volkswagen de México and the Independent Union of Automotive Industry Workers at Volkswagen (SITIAVW) have moved into the voting phase. While Volkswagen reported a 17.3% increase in cumulative production and a 19.4% rise in exports between January and August 2026, production reconfigurations have impacted the supply chain. Leobardo Soto Martínez, leader of the CTM in Puebla, reported that approximately 3,000 workers in the Puebla and Tlaxcala auto parts sectors lost their jobs in less than a week due to reduced demand.

Luis Ernesto Derbez, rector of Udlap, warned that these layoffs may be the beginning of a larger trend, projecting potential reductions of 50,000 to 100,000 jobs across all plants over the next four years if the industry fails to adapt to international market changes. He emphasized the need for the state government to diversify the auto parts industry.

In a separate economic development move, the state of Puebla is projecting up to 20 billion pesos in investments for the Polo de Desarrollo para el Bienestar in San José Chiapa by the end of 2026. Víctor Gabriel Chedraui, head of the Secretariat of Economic Development and Labor, noted that these investments, involving the automotive and food sectors, depend on the establishment of a regulatory trust expected by early October.
