Volkswagen announces China imports and ID.4 battery recall
Volkswagen is shifting its long-standing strategy by confirming plans to import vehicles manufactured in China to the European market. CEO Thomas Schäfer announced the decision, which marks a departure from the company's previous policy of developing Chinese-made models exclusively for the Chinese market. This move is driven by the need to remain competitive against Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers and to manage production costs, as manufacturing advanced electric vehicles in China is significantly more cost-effective than in Europe.
Separately, Volkswagen has issued a recall for approximately 22,524 ID.4 electric SUVs in the United States due to potential fire risks. The recall affects model years 2023 through 2026. To mitigate the risk of thermal propagation in high-voltage batteries, the company is implementing a remote software update that limits the maximum charge to 80%. While this restriction will reduce driving range, it is a preventative measure while a permanent solution is developed.
