Volkswagen announces electric Golf 9 and production shifts

Volkswagen has announced significant shifts in its vehicle production strategy, focusing on its transition to electric mobility. The upcoming ninth generation of the Golf will be entirely electric, built on the new SSP platform. Production of this model is slated to begin in Wolfsburg around 2030.

To facilitate this transition, the current internal combustion and hybrid Golf 8 will have its production transferred to Mexico starting in the second half of 2027. This move is intended to free up production lines in Wolfsburg to accommodate the new SSP platform.

In its ongoing electric offensive, Volkswagen is also introducing the ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV. While initial models were offered at higher price points, a more affordable ‘Trend’ trim is expected to be available for order starting in mid-October 2026, with an entry price of approximately 27,995 euros. The ID. Cross will feature various motor outputs and battery sizes, including a 37-kWh battery option.
