Volkswagen EV expansion and battery recall management
Overview
Volkswagen is advancing its dual-track strategy, balancing electric vehicle (EV) expansion with internal combustion engines. The company is undergoing a strategic rebranding of its electric lineup, moving away from a purely numerical ID system toward established model names.
Following its presentation at the Paris Motor Show, the ID. Tiguan has been officially unveiled as a successor to the ID. 4 and ID. 5. Designed with a more angular aesthetic, the model incorporates mechanical door handles and a return to physical buttons on the steering wheel and center console to address previous user criticism. In markets such as Finland, Denmark, and Norway, the lineup includes a 58 kWh rear-wheel-drive version starting at 48,990 euros, while higher-end 77 kWh models offer ranges up to 607 km. While the ID. Tiguan will be sold alongside combustion and hybrid versions, some reports note that high equipment costs may make it significantly more expensive than the ID. 4.
The company is also expanding its compact SUV offerings with the ID. Cross, which features a 37 kWh battery and is positioned as an entry-level option in markets like Croatia. Additionally, Volkswagen has introduced the ID.3 Neo, an updated electric compact featuring 231 horsepower, a redesigned exterior, and a driving range of up to 628 km.
Further expanding the lineup, Volkswagen has launched the ID. Polo and the high-performance ID. Polo GTI. To compete with low-cost Chinese manufacturers, an entry-level EV based on the ‘ID. EVERY1’ concept is expected around 2027. Regarding long-term production, the ninth-generation Golf will be entirely electric on the SSP platform by 2030. Meanwhile, the company continues to manage a global recall of approximately 73,000 electric vehicles due to defective high-voltage battery cells.
