Volkswagen approves major restructuring and cost-cutting plan

Volkswagen has approved its “Future Plan 2030,” marking the largest restructuring in the company’s 89-year history. The plan aims to address intense competition from Chinese manufacturers, excess production capacity, and declining profit margins. The restructuring could cost as much as 16 billion euros, with approximately 10 billion euros potentially allocated to workforce reductions.

The company plans to eliminate up to 50,000 jobs globally, which, when combined with previous reduction programs, could affect up to 100,000 positions. The restructuring also involves potential production changes at four German plants: Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Audi’s Neckarsulm, with timelines for potential phase-outs spanning from 2031 to 2034.

To improve competitiveness, Volkswagen intends to increase its operating return on sales to 9% and reduce its annual vehicle production to approximately nine million units. The company also plans to significantly streamline its model lineup, potentially reducing it from 150 to 75 models. In North America, the company is exploring new strategies, including the potential introduction of robust SUVs and pickup trucks to better serve the regional market.
