Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume warns of critical crisis and major restructuring FAST-MOVING

Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has characterized the company's current economic situation as 'more than critical,' prompting the launch of the largest transformation plan in the group's history. The automaker is facing intense pressure from global market shifts, geopolitical tensions, and increasing competition, particularly from Chinese manufacturers.

To maintain competitiveness and fund necessary investments in new technologies and electrification, the company is pursuing aggressive cost-cutting measures. These plans include potential job cuts of up to 50,000 employees and the possible closure of four production sites: Emden, Hannover, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm. Management noted that current operating margins of 3.8 percent are insufficient to sustain long-term technological development.

In response to demands from the works council, the Volkswagen board will participate in nine extraordinary works meetings across various German locations, including Wolfsburg, Emden, and Zwickau, starting August 25, 2026. The restructuring aims to address high administrative costs, which are reportedly 30 percent higher than those of comparable companies, and to streamline complex organizational structures.
