Volkswagen challenges Renault in European electric car market

The European small electric vehicle market is seeing intensified competition between Renault and the Volkswagen Group. Renault has previously dominated this segment, notably with the Renault 5, which saw over 81,000 units sold in Europe during 2025. However, Volkswagen is positioned to challenge this lead with the launch of new entry-level models.

Initial demand for Volkswagen's new electric offerings appears strong, with reports indicating 30,000 orders for the Volkswagen ID. Polo and 35,000 orders for the Skoda Epiq. This surge in interest from both Volkswagen and Skoda could potentially impact delivery timelines and challenge Renault's market position in the urban electric car segment.

Historically, Renault has focused on fuel efficiency and sobriety, tracing back to the 1981 EVE (Elements for an Economical Car) prototype developed in collaboration with the French Agency for Energy Savings (AEE) following the oil crises of the 1970s.
