Volkswagen confirms electric Amarok pickup for 2029

Volkswagen confirmed that the current Amarok pickup will continue with its diesel powertrain and will not receive a plug‑in hybrid version in the near term. The company said a major redesign is planned for the third generation, expected around 2029‑2030, which will bring both a plug‑in hybrid and a fully electric variant.

The present Amarok is built in collaboration with Ford and will stay unchanged until the end of the existing agreement. Volkswagen’s brand head Stefan Mecha indicated that the electric powertrain will be introduced after the partnership expires, and the company is also evaluating a production shift to China, where a SAIC‑based model could replace the Amarok in South America.
