Volkswagen considers divesting Lamborghini and Ducati
German automotive group Volkswagen is re‑examining the possible sale of two of its most valuable premium brands, Lamborghini and Ducati, as part of a sweeping restructuring plan. The company aims to cut costs, improve efficiency and fund its transition to electric vehicles, which may involve up to 100,000 job cuts and the closure of four factories.
Analysts note that Lamborghini generated about $888 million in profit last year and is now valued at over $22 billion, while Ducati, acquired in 2012 for roughly $909 million, remains a prestigious asset in the group’s portfolio. No official confirmation has been given; Volkswagen has declined to comment on the rumours, stating that decisions are still under internal review.
The speculation follows broader pressures on the automaker, including intensified competition from Chinese manufacturers, rising tariffs and slowing demand in key markets. A sale of either brand could provide short‑term capital but would also mean relinquishing two globally recognised names in the car and motorcycle sectors.
