Volkswagen crisis forces Swiss SFS plant closure, 110 jobs lost

A slowdown in Germany's automotive industry, driven by Volkswagen's reduced sales in China, excess production capacity in Europe and challenges with the shift to electric vehicles, is spilling over into Switzerland. The Swiss supplier SFS announced it will shut its Flawil factory by the end of 2027, eliminating 110 positions that produce precision metal components for German car manufacturers.

Switzerland's automotive supplier sector employed roughly 32,000 workers in 2023, but the drop in vehicle production is already shrinking demand for components and industrial equipment. While the closures underscore the immediate labour impact, some analysts suggest the restructuring could eventually create new development opportunities for the Swiss market.
