Volkswagen de México and SITIAVW face strike deadline

Volkswagen de México and the Independent Union of Volkswagen Automotive Industry Workers (SITIAVW) are facing a deadline on Tuesday, August 18, to resolve 2026 salary and contract negotiations. The deadline is set for 11:00 AM, leaving the parties with two primary options: a strike or an extension of the negotiation period.

SITIAVW, representing approximately 7,100 workers, is seeking a 13 percent direct salary increase and a 4 percent increase in benefits. While negotiations remain open, differences persist between the union and the company. An extension is considered a likely necessity to allow time for any potential agreement to be presented to and voted upon by the workforce, as Mexican labor law requires a specific consultation period.

In preparation for a potential work stoppage, the union has already organized strike committees and established logistics for the factory located in San Lorenzo Almecatla, including worker shifts and guard rotations.
