Volkswagen de México strike postponed after workers reject wage offer

Workers at Volkswagen de México have rejected a proposed 10.4% wage increase, leading to a postponed strike scheduled for October 2 at 11:00 AM. The decision follows a vote by the Independent Union of Automotive Industry Workers (SITIAVW), where the proposal was rejected by 67% of members.

The dispute centers on the company's offer of a 10.4% increase spread over 18 months, which workers argue does not sufficiently account for inflation. This marks the third time since 2022 that workers have rejected company wage proposals. Volkswagen has stated that the 10.4% offer represents its “most viable financial effort” in the country and has expressed a willingness to continue dialogue, provided it remains “responsible, realistic, and aligned with the company's situation.”

Mexico's Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) and the Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration (CFCRL) have called on both the company and the union to return to the negotiating table to prioritize collective bargaining and conciliation to avoid industrial action.
