Volkswagen recalls 72,700 electric vehicles over battery fire risk

Volkswagen is conducting a global recall of approximately 72,700 electric vehicles due to defective high-voltage battery cells. The recall primarily affects Volkswagen models ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID. Buzz, as well as the Cupra Born. The affected vehicles were manufactured between 2022 and 2025.

Internal quality checks revealed that certain battery cells do not meet required specifications due to production errors by suppliers. In rare instances, these defects could lead to increased thermal stress and, in extreme cases, a vehicle fire. While no personal injuries or property damage have been reported, Volkswagen has implemented immediate safety measures.

As a precaution, owners of affected vehicles are advised to limit battery charging to a maximum of 80 percent capacity until inspections are completed at an authorized service center. In some cases, Volkswagen is using software updates to remotely limit the charging capacity. Owners will be notified of the recall and specific next steps via mail.
