Volkswagen accelerates electric vehicle expansion and platform transition
Volkswagen is advancing its electric vehicle strategy through new model launches, platform transitions, and regional expansions. At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, the company showcased several ID. series updates, including the ID. Tiguan, which is set to replace the ID. 4 and ID. 5, and the ID. Polo, aimed at democratizing electric mobility.
To improve competitiveness and lower costs, Volkswagen is transitioning from the MEB architecture to the new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). This shift is central to the development of the second-generation ID. Buzz, which CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed will feature improved technology and more accessible pricing. Additionally, the company is exploring the potential import of select China-developed models, such as the ID. Era 9X, into European markets.
In specific markets, the company is expanding its footprint. In Brazil, the ID. 4 has arrived at Carbel VW dealerships in Belo Horizonte, featuring improved power and range. In Denmark, a more affordable version of the ID. Cross has been introduced using LFP battery technology to compete with lower-priced rivals. Meanwhile, the company continues to refine its lineup with models like the ID. 3 and the upcoming ID. Polo, which competes directly with rivals like the Kia EV2.
