Volkswagen plans closure of four German plants by 2034
Volkswagen management is preparing a proposal for its supervisory board to phase out production at four German plants: Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Neckarsulm. According to internal reports, production in Emden and Zwickau would end in 2031, followed by Hannover in 2032 and Neckarsulm in 2034.
Financial Director Arno Antlitz stated that these locations lack economic viability beyond the 2030s due to high production costs compared to other European sites. The company is already undergoing a reduction of 50,000 jobs through 2030, but management is considering further cuts that could potentially reach up to 90,000 positions.
The announcement has sparked significant tension. The IG Metall union has warned of massive resistance if the company attempts to dismantle previously agreed restructuring packages. Meanwhile, Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has suggested extending working hours at the Zwickau plant to prevent its closure, citing its efficiency and importance to the regional economy.
