Volkswagen faces crisis threatening Wolfsburg economy

Volkswagen is currently navigating a severe crisis characterized by declining sales, intense competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, and a significant need for cost reductions. The company aims to cut more than 35,000 jobs at German locations by 2030.

As the city of Wolfsburg was founded specifically as a settlement for VW workers, the company's instability poses a direct threat to local employment, tax revenue, housing prices, and purchasing power. Approximately one-third of Wolfsburg's workforce is employed directly or indirectly by the group.

Financial impacts are already visible in other regions; for instance, Audi's location in Ingolstadt expects trade tax revenues to drop from 191 million euros in 2023 to a projected 55 million euros in 2025. Additionally, VW management is expected to forgo over 300 million euros by 2030 through bonus cuts and restructured payments.
