Volkswagen plans 50,000 global job cuts amid union conflict

Volkswagen is facing significant internal conflict following the announcement of plans to cut 50,000 jobs globally in the coming years. The company has terminated several collective agreements, including the critical framework agreement, citing the need to adjust regulations due to cost pressures.

Thorsten Gröger, a regional leader for the IG Metall union, has sharply criticized the company's leadership. He described their approach as “respektlos” (disrespectful) toward employees and “verantwortungslos” (irresponsible) toward the company itself, noting that the public and media were informed of the plan to terminate agreements before the actual negotiators were briefed.

Approximately half of the planned job reductions could impact German locations. The uncertainty extends to several major sites, including Emden, Hannover, Zwickau, and Audi’s Neckarsulm plant, with the long-term future of these facilities remaining uncertain beyond 2034.
