Volkswagen faces massive restructuring and job cuts amid industry crisis
Volkswagen is undergoing a massive restructuring amid a deep crisis in the German automotive industry. CEO Oliver Blume has confirmed plans to cut 50,000 jobs globally, including 25,000 positions in Germany. The company is facing intense pressure from Chinese electric vehicle competitors, high production costs, and shifting market demands.
Labor representatives have expressed significant opposition to the plan. Works Council head Daniela Cavallo warned that the restructuring and potential plant closures could threaten up to 115,000 jobs in Germany, while other estimates suggest long-term risks to as many as 140,000 positions. Tensions are high, with employees at a Wolfsburg meeting greeting management with boos.
To improve competitiveness, the company is also looking at reducing management roles in central functions by 25 percent. Some plants, including Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Neckarsulm, face uncertain futures. In Osnabrück, discussions are underway regarding the potential transition of the plant to military production by Israeli contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems following VW's planned exit in 2027.
In Mexico, the situation is also impacting local operations, with reports of approximately 1,200 workers facing layoffs in Puebla as part of the broader global cost-cutting measures.
