Volkswagen faces labor disputes and supply chain insolvency

Volkswagen is facing significant internal and external turmoil as the automaker navigates a major restructuring. Internally, the company is planning a comprehensive overhaul of its compensation system, set to begin on January 1, 2027. This reform aims to dissolve the traditional distinction between workers and employees to better reflect modern industrial workflows.

However, tensions are rising following the company's decision to terminate ten collective agreements, including a key framework agreement, citing cost pressures. This move has drawn sharp criticism from the IG Metall union and the works council, who described the management's actions as “disrespectful” and “irresponsible.” There is also a public dispute regarding statements made by CEO Oliver Blume; labor representatives have contested his claims that employees requested a revision of existing agreements.

The crisis is also impacting the supply chain. KmB Technologie GmbH, an automotive supplier in Zerbst, has filed for insolvency after a major customer—a primary supplier for Volkswagen—failed to extend a key contract. The insolvency affects approximately 200 employees, though production may continue under a preliminary insolvency administrator with support from customers via advance payments.
