Volkswagen Group announces major restructuring and 50,000 job cuts

Volkswagen Group is undergoing its most significant restructuring in history, with plans to cut approximately 50,000 jobs. This move follows a reduction in profit margin forecasts for 2026 to a maximum of 1%, driven by a sluggish Chinese market, increased retirement provisions, and moderated expectations for Porsche.

The restructuring heavily impacts Spanish operations, specifically the SEAT brand and the Martorell and Landaben plants in Navarra. While some regional political forecasts previously predicted decline for the Navarra plant, current reports indicate it aims to manufacture four models and potentially break production records by 2027.

In Germany, labor unrest has escalated. Workers at Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg, as well as at BMW and Bosch, have engaged in protests. Union leaders from IG Metall are calling for greater protection against unfair Chinese competition and more effective European Union subsidy policies.
