Volkswagen ID. 3 battery retains 89% capacity after 220,000 km

A long-term durability test conducted by the German automobile club ADAC has revealed the battery health of a Volkswagen ID. 3 after 220,000 kilometers of use. The vehicle, equipped with a 77 kWh battery, has been undergoing rigorous testing since 2021, involving regular highway driving, daily commutes in various weather conditions, and frequent use of rapid charging.

Despite heavy usage and frequent charging to 100%, the battery retained 89% of its original capacity. This represents an average degradation rate of approximately 1% for every 22,000 kilometers. The test results significantly exceed the manufacturer's warranty threshold, which typically guarantees that the battery state of health remains above 70% for up to 160,000 kilometers or eight years.

Software updates have also contributed to the vehicle's efficiency, helping to maintain a consistent real-world driving range. The ID. 3 continues to support fast charging up to 160 kW, allowing a charge from 10% to 80% in roughly 30 minutes.
