Volkswagen ID. Buzz development: range‑extender study dropped and 2027 model upgrades unveiled
Volkswagen explored adding a small gasoline engine to the electric ID. Buzz as a range‑extender for the North‑American market, but the concept was abandoned because the MEB platform leaves virtually no space for an extra motor and the required redesign would be prohibitively costly. The decision leaves the ID. Buzz as a pure‑electric vehicle, a model that continues to sell well in Europe but has struggled to meet its ambitious U.S. sales targets.
In February 2026 Volkswagen announced the 2027 ID. Buzz lineup, introducing a new Pro+ variant available in short‑wheelbase (five‑seat) and long‑wheelbase (seven‑seat) versions. The update adds bidirectional charging capability (vehicle‑to‑home and vehicle‑to‑grid), enhanced driver‑assistance features, a refreshed interior with optional massage seats, ambient lighting and a premium sound system, and a “Goodnight” camping package. Pricing starts at US$75,990 for the base Pro model and US$84,990 for the Pro+ version.
