Volkswagen ID. Buzz fleet generates revenue via V2G technology
The German energy provider Enercity is successfully testing Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology using a fleet of twelve Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric vehicles. This technology allows electric vehicles to not only charge from the grid but also return stored electricity back to the power network when demand or market conditions are favorable.
By aggregating the twelve vehicles into a single virtual storage unit, Enercity achieved a collective power capacity exceeding 0.1 MW, which is the minimum threshold required to trade energy on the electricity market. During real-world testing, the fleet operated for 53 hours on the intraday market, generating modest initial revenues.
Enercity aims to use these results to evaluate how V2G can reduce overall fleet operating costs and improve energy efficiency. The company plans to expand this experiment to a larger fleet of 75 ID. Buzz Cargo vehicles, integrating them into a more complex energy management system.
