Volkswagen ID. Buzz sees anniversary launch in Japan amid production concerns in Germany

Volkswagen is facing contrasting developments regarding its electric ID. Buzz minivan. In Japan, Volkswagen Japan is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the model's market introduction with the release of a limited ‘1st Anniversary Edition’. This special edition, limited to 70 units, features a unique ‘Candy White’ and ‘Medium Blue Metallic’ two-tone exterior and upgraded interior options, including a Harman Kardon premium sound system for the Long Wheelbase version.

However, the model is presenting significant challenges for Volkswagen’s manufacturing operations in Germany. Reports indicate that production volumes at the Hannover plant are falling short of the 100,000-unit goal, currently reaching only about 60,000 units per year. High fixed costs at the Hannover facility, combined with the ID. Buzz’s high price point and insufficient range, have placed the plant at risk of closure or the outsourcing of commercial vehicle production to lower-cost locations like Poland. While the company plans to showcase an electric camper concept, the long-term future of the plant remains uncertain as it awaits new platforms and models.
