Volkswagen to replace ID. 4 and ID. 5 with new ID. Tiguan
Volkswagen has announced a strategic shift in its electric vehicle naming convention, confirming that the new ID. Tiguan will replace the ID. 4 and ID. 5 models. This move marks a departure from purely numerical designations in favor of established, high-recognition brand names like Tiguan, which has seen over 8.3 million units produced globally.
The all-electric ID. Tiguan is scheduled for a world premiere in early October, with a planned market launch in Europe at the beginning of 2027. In the United States, the model is expected to arrive later, potentially as a 2028 model. Notably, the electric ID. Tiguan will be sold alongside the existing internal combustion and hybrid Tiguan models, allowing customers to choose between different propulsion systems.
Technical details regarding battery capacity, range, and charging speeds remain undisclosed, but the vehicle is expected to utilize the updated MEB+ platform. Design updates include a more traditional Volkswagen aesthetic and a return to physical controls in the cabin to address previous criticisms of touch-only interfaces. The new model aims to improve upon the range and charging performance of the outgoing ID. 4 to better compete with rivals.
