Volkswagen considers expanded job cuts and site risks in Germany
Volkswagen is facing a major restructuring as management seeks to deepen cost-cutting measures to remain competitive against international rivals and rising energy costs. While the company had previously announced plans to reduce 50,000 jobs by 2030, CEO Oliver Blume has indicated that further savings are necessary, potentially impacting tens of thousands of additional positions.
The proposed cuts may target roles outside of direct vehicle production, including central functions, development, and sales. Four major German locations—Emden, Zwickau, Neckarsulm, and Hannover—are identified as being at risk. Internal estimates suggest that total job losses in Germany could reach approximately 75,000 by 2030.
The announcement has sparked significant tension with the IG Metall union. Regional official Thorsten Gröger criticized the management's communication as a “communication disaster” and warned that the current approach provokes conflict. The union has indicated it is preparing for potential industrial action, which could become an option once the current peace agreement expires at the end of the year.
