Volkswagen launches updated Polo compact and outlines large-scale restructuring plan

Volkswagen unveiled a heavily restyled Polo compact, featuring a front LED Matrix IQ LIGHT projector system, continuous LED light strip, redesigned rear lighting and a new MQB A0 platform that improves torsional rigidity and interior space. The model is offered with 1.0‑litre three‑cylinder TSI engines delivering 95 hp or 110 hp and up to 175 Nm of torque, with a variable‑geometry turbo in the higher output version.

At the same time, CEO Oliver Blume met workers and unions at the Wolfsburg, Emden and Zwickau plants to present a restructuring programme aimed at cutting costs, reducing overcapacity and preserving jobs. The plan discusses potential reductions affecting up to 140,000 positions, though Volkswagen says no final agreements exist. So far about 37,000 roles have been eliminated through voluntary exits and early retirements. The company targets a production volume of roughly 9 million vehicles per year, a cut from current capacity, with broader implications for suppliers, logistics and regional manufacturing districts.
