Volkswagen México layoffs trigger job losses for regional auto parts suppliers

The automotive industry crisis in Mexico is impacting auto parts suppliers in the states of Puebla and Tlaxcala. According to Leobardo Soto Martínez, leader of the CTM in Puebla, approximately 3,000 workers have lost their jobs in less than a week due to reduced demand and production reconfiguration following workforce reductions at Volkswagen.

Luis Ernesto Derbez, rector of Udlap, warned that current layoffs may only be the beginning. He noted that while 300 to 400 workers have recently left Volkswagen México, projections suggest a potential reduction of 50,000 to 100,000 jobs across all plants over the next four years. Derbez attributed the company's struggles to a failure to adapt to international market changes and emphasized the need for the state government to diversify the auto parts industry to mitigate the economic impact on the region.
