Automakers shift EV strategies as ID. Polo and IONIQ 3 see high demand

The European automotive market is seeing significant shifts in electric vehicle (EV) strategy and demand. Volkswagen’s new ID. Polo has seen exceptionally high demand, with over 30,000 orders leading to waiting lists of up to 10 months. The model is being produced in Martorell, Spain, as part of a push to offer more affordable EVs to compete with Chinese manufacturers.

Hyundai has also launched the IONIQ 3 in Europe, including Italy, with prices starting around €27,900 to €29,900. The model is produced at the İzmit plant in Türkiye and offers various battery configurations, with a maximum range of 497 km. Hyundai is also preparing for hybrid production of the Bayon and i20 models at the same facility.

Skoda is undergoing a strategic reorganization. CEO Klaus Zellmer indicated that while the Fabia will remain in the lineup through the 2030s, an electric version may not arrive until 2031. Additionally, the company is evaluating the future of the Superb model due to declining demand for traditional sedans and wagons, considering whether a larger Octavia could eventually cover both segments using the new SSP platform.
