Volkswagen Osnabrück plant faces uncertain future amid Iron Dome missile deal doubts

Israeli defence firm Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is reportedly evaluating the relocation of Tamir interceptor missile production for its Iron Dome system to India, which could remove Volkswagen's Osnabrück plant from contention as a component‑manufacturing site. The plant, scheduled to cease vehicle production in 2027, supports roughly 2,300 jobs, and its future hinges on securing a follow‑up use.

Negotiations have encountered resistance within Volkswagen, particularly from the Qatar Investment Authority, a major shareholder holding about 17% of voting rights, which has expressed reservations about partnering with the Israeli state‑owned company. Qatar’s involvement has reportedly complicated talks, while the Lower Saxony state authorities are exploring a possible stake in the site to facilitate a transition to defence production.

If Rafael proceeds with an Indian facility, the Osnabrück plant could miss out on the defence contract, leaving its long‑term outlook uncertain.
