Volkswagen pauses production at Osnabrück plant, explores defense-sector takeover

Volkswagen announced that production at its Osnabrück factory in Germany will be halted, extending the summer shutdown by a week and suspending output of the T‑Roc Cabriolet. The move, described by the company as a response to a “seasonal demand decline,” affects roughly 2,300 employees and puts the plant’s future beyond 2027 into doubt.

The automaker is evaluating “sustainable alternatives” and has entered talks with defence‑industry firms about repurposing the site. Potential buyers include Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, while German defence contractor Rheinmetall has withdrawn from negotiations. No final agreement has been reached yet, and the plant’s long‑term use remains uncertain.
