Volkswagen plans up to 100,000 layoffs and plant cuts, eyes sale of Lamborghini and Ducati

Volkswagen AG is reportedly evaluating a large‑scale restructuring that could eliminate as many as 100,000 jobs worldwide. The plan, outlined by CEO Oliver Blume in a “2030 vision” briefing, includes the possible closure or adjustment of four German factories – in Hanover, Zwickau, Emden and the Audi plant at Ingos – and a broader reduction of global workforce numbers.

At the same time, the group is considering the sale of its high‑value premium brands Lamborghini and Ducati to raise capital for the costly shift toward electric vehicles and new model development. The idea follows a recent sale of a majority stake in its marine‑engine business. While the proposals remain under internal discussion and have not been approved, they reflect mounting pressure from Chinese EV competitors, high European production costs, and the need to fund the group’s electrification strategy.
