Volkswagen recalls approximately 73,000 electric vehicles due to battery risks
Volkswagen has initiated a global recall of nearly 73,000 electric vehicles following the discovery of faulty high-voltage battery cells. Internal quality controls identified manufacturing defects from a supplier that could lead to excessive thermal stress and, in extreme cases, potential fires.
The recall affects several models, including the Volkswagen ID. 3, ID. 4, ID. 7, and ID. Buzz produced between 2022 and 2025, as well as Cupra Born models manufactured between 2022 and 2024. Approximately 10,000 of the affected vehicles are located in Germany, while over 22,000 ID. 4 units are involved in the United States.
As a precautionary measure, Volkswagen is limiting the maximum charging capacity of affected vehicles to 80% via remote software updates or manual owner restrictions. The company stated that “in rare cases, this can lead to increased thermal stress on the batteries; in extreme situations, a fire could be triggered.” While some vehicles may require battery module replacements, the manufacturer noted that a software update might suffice for some cases. Affected owners will be notified via written correspondence.
