Volkswagen recalls thousands of electric vehicles over battery fire risk

Volkswagen is preparing a major recall of several thousand electric vehicles due to defective high-voltage battery cells that pose a fire risk. The issue, attributed to manufacturing errors by suppliers, affects models produced between 2023 and 2025, including the ID. 3, ID. 4, ID. 7, ID. Buzz, and Cupra Born.

In the United States, the recall specifically involves approximately 22,524 ID. 4 SUVs for model years 2023 to 2026. As a safety precaution, Volkswagen is advising affected owners to limit their vehicle's maximum charge to 80% until a permanent remedy is implemented. The company is coordinating with relevant authorities in the US, UK, Germany, and other European markets to manage the recall.

While the company works on a permanent fix, which may involve software updates or battery module replacements, owners will be notified by mail. This follows a previous large-scale recall earlier this year involving nearly 100,000 electric vehicles for different battery-related issues.
