Volkswagen reduces shifts in Mexico, risking 1,200 jobs

Volkswagen has announced a reduction in work shifts at its Puebla plant in Mexico, impacting the production of Jetta and Tiguan models. This decision has led to the direct layoff of 611 workers at the facility and placed an additional 650 jobs at risk across seven local supplier companies.

The reduction in shifts is part of a broader global restructuring plan by the German automaker, which aims to cut 50,000 positions worldwide. The contraction in orders has created a domino effect throughout the local automotive supply chain.

Carlos Sosa Spínola, president of the local Canacintra, acknowledged the impact of the cuts but emphasized the importance of relocating the displaced workers. While the Chamber of the Transformation Industry anticipates new job opportunities by 2027 due to future investments, specific details regarding these projects have not yet been released.
