Volkswagen reveals ID. ERA 5X electric SUV developed in China

Volkswagen has revealed the ID. ERA 5X, a new electric SUV designed for the Chinese market. The vehicle was officially identified through filings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

As the first production model to utilize the Compact Main Platform (CMP) and the China Electronic Architecture (CEA), the ID. ERA 5X is a result of collaboration between SAIC-Volkswagen and Chinese automaker XPeng. The SUV is powered by a 155 kW electric motor and utilizes a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL.

Technical specifications indicate the vehicle features a LiDAR system and the “Xingyun” intelligent assisted driving technology, which aims to provide L2++ level autonomous driving capabilities in urban environments. The interior is expected to feature the “Yunqi” smart cockpit.

Volkswagen is also considering the possibility of introducing these China-developed models to the European market, though such a move would require significant adaptations to meet local safety regulations and technical standards.
