Volkswagen shifts EV naming strategy with new ID. Polo, Tiguan, and Cross models

Volkswagen is implementing a strategic shift in its electric vehicle (EV) naming convention, moving away from purely numerical identifiers toward established brand names. This strategy includes the launch of the ID. Polo GTI, which is available for order in Europe with a base price of approximately €40,000. The ID. Polo GTI features a 166 kW motor, a 52 kWh battery, and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.8 seconds.

Additionally, the company is introducing the ID. Tiguan, which will succeed the ID. 4 and ID. 5 models. Expected to enter the market in early 2027, the ID. Tiguan will be sold alongside traditional combustion and hybrid Tiguan models. This move aims to leverage the strong brand recognition of the Tiguan, which has seen over 8.3 million units produced to date.

Volkswagen is also expanding its compact SUV lineup with the ID. Cross. Built on the MEB+ platform, the ID. Cross is positioned as an affordable entry into electromobility, with prices starting around €28,000 for the base version. The model offers various battery sizes and power outputs, with a maximum range of up to 427 km under WLTP standards.
