Volkswagen Smart eBike to debut with radar-activated rear camera at IFA Berlin
Volkswagen is set to debut the Smart eBike at the IFA Berlin technology show, featuring what is described as a first-of-its-kind radar-activated rear camera system for production electric bikes. Developed by premium bike maker n+ under license from Volkswagen, the eBike utilizes automotive-derived technology to enhance rider safety.
The central feature, named ‘Smart View’, consists of a radar and camera unit integrated into the rear mudguard that monitors traffic up to 70 meters behind the rider. This system streams a live rear view to a full-color display integrated into the handlebars. In ‘Auto Mode’, the display automatically switches to the camera feed when the radar detects a vehicle approaching.
The safety ecosystem includes ‘Smart Glasses’ with a heads-up display for navigation and radar alerts, as well as a ‘Smart Helmet’ featuring MIPS protection, integrated LED lighting, and crash detection that can alert emergency contacts. Peter Jost, CEO of Volkswagen Accessories, stated that the project demonstrates how established automotive technologies can be transferred to two wheels to improve rider awareness and confidence in traffic.
